Why I became a LRRP:

HuckabyAs an 05B Radio Operator with the 65th Engr BN, that was the MOS for a TC in the flamethrower platoon. All well and good until a sister track hit a mine, my driver was shoot off the track, and I was hit by a grenade. Figured there was a better place to work!  

 

Bio:

US Navy 1961 - 1964, participated in the Cuban Missle Blockade.
US Army 1964 - 1981, Retired as 1SG.

Three tours in Nam: (1) 66-67 LRRPS; (2) 68-69 5th Bn 60th Inf (Mech) 9th ID, 1/16th Inf (Mech) 1st ID, then 244th Avn Co, Mohawks; (3)70 - 71 MACV Advisory Team 87.

73-76 First Sergeant for 64th Aviation company, 6th BN Officer Student Company, Ft. Rucker,

77-79 First Sergeant 189th ATC Company, Germany.

81 - 82: After retirement from Army, went to Saudia Arabia working as Military Instructor for the Saudi National Guard.

83-2001 Worked as Safety Manager for Various Healthcare and VA Hospitals;

2001 - 2008: US Customs Service, then Department of Homeland Security;

2008 -2010: DOD, US Army Safety Office, Ft. McPherson, GA.

First Sergeant (Ret), Army, Perry, GA.

After first serving in the Navy during the Naval Blockade of Cuba in 1962, he entered the Army for the remainder of his military career. During three years in Vietnam as a Long Range Reconnaissance Team Leader he served in the 25th, 9th, & 1st INF DIVs, 1st AVN BDE, and Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. Continually displaying selflessness, devotion to duty, and bravery, he was twice decorated for heroism and was wounded four times, including being bayoneted during hand-to-hand fighting. His combat awards are: Combat Infantry Badge, four Purple Hearts, and two Bronze Star Medals for Valor.
