They decided that our unit needed to transfer up to the border with North Viet Nam (Long Bien to Tan My). When the old man told me that he also told me that he wasn’t going to make me go because I had already done my share for the unit and I hadn’t taken a mid tour leave so I could go on home. Well a couple of hours later he came back and told me that he had changed his mind and that he wanted me to be with him. A couple of hours later he came back through and said: “Aw shit, go on home.” That was all I needed. I gathered up a change of uniform and left for squadron headquarters on foot. The next morning as the unit was flying out to the north I was in with the S-1 telling him to cut orders transferring me to CONUS. That afternoon I was on a 727 for Ft Dix NJ.
