Mess Hall Stories

Mike Vaughn

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................

My crew had a mission to depart our base camp just before evening chow. CPT Harold Fisher told my gunner Don Adams and me to go to the Mess Hall and tell them we needed to eat before the troop’s chow time. The Mess Sergeant told us, in a very explicit and loud voice, “You will eat when the other troop eat.” Hey, he outranked me, what was I gonna say? I went to CPT Fisher and explained the situation.

CPT Fisher immediately went to have a talk with the Mess Sergeant. When Captain Fisher was upset, it could be a very unpleasant experience for someone.

Anyway, my gunner and I were allowed to eat before the troop.

About a week later I was assigned KP duty. As soon as I walked into the Mess Hall, the Mess Sergeant said, “I remember you.”

Sometimes, what comes around, goes around. It was not my best day in Uncle Sam’s Army.
