How to join the Centaur Society

.....................................................................................................................................................................................

Send an email to the Society Moderator Bruce Powell and state that you understand and agree with our basic rules of membership and would like to join us. There are no dues or fees. You must agree with our simple rules of membership. You may quit at any time.

Rules of Membership:
1. Maintain the security of the list. Do not include the list with any of your other emails; even to other Centaurs.
This is a simple matter of protecting the privacy of our members. Without this assurance, some are reluctant to join.

2. Post and discuss only items that pertain directly to the Centaur legacy.
A little BS here and there is a good thing, but not to "all" the members of the list. Keep that stuff to your own email group.

3. Do not add Society members to your "Forwards" list without their specific permission.
Forwarded messages are well intended, sometimes even seemingly indispensable information, however, they most often become additional unwanted messages in our inboxes. Some have said they have not joined simply for this reason (that they might get more unwanted Forwards). The other point is that a very large percentage of "Forwarded" messages are just data collection scams.

4. Review information brought to you through our email list (mostly Updates or notes from our Historian) and provide input or assistance as you can.

5. Visit and use the website frequently.
The volume of traffic at our site (hits) increases the site recognition and popularity. This gives us more exposure and a better chance to find and include more Centaurs.

6. Provide photos and information that allows us to create a basic MyPage for you.

Background:

Initially the Society was intended to work similar to a chat room or guest list but with stricter controls and email address protection. Other social media software was not used to eliminate the garbage invasion they present and loss of list control and privacy.

Because of the size, participation and number of tour years covered Society has made a few changes in the way it operates. It is now more under the control of a full time "Moderator" who sends out frequent "Updates" (similar to a newsletter) keeping all members informed of the continually growing website changes and providing coordinating information. Members can then coordinate within their own email groups of friends and provide information to the Moderator for distribution to the Society as required. This cuts down on the number of emails to individuals. Each member has the master list of Society email addresses and the authority to send out to the whole group if they feel it is worthy.

"Silent" Society Email List (a second Society list):
Some members just can't afford, or don't want, to have the increased email traffic in their inbox, but would like to get the "Updates" (Newsletters) so they can monitor the growth of the site. When the "Updates" are emailed out to the Society by the Moderator, a second mailing is made to the "Silent" list. This way these members will not receive any "Reply to All" follow ups or messages from other members. They can still participate as much as they wish.
